BioDetection Systems BV is a Dutch SME established in 2001 that develops, markets and applies bio-based detection methods for a wide range of applications. Focus is on safety assessment and quality control of food, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, bio-based materials, water and the environment.

Project role: BDS will apply bio-assay-based methods for identification and purification from fungal residues of secondary fungal metabolites with medicinal and nutritional benefits. Also BDS will select and apply bio-based methods for human safety assessment of end products. BDS will contribute to the business strategy and the world-wide dissemination of innovative products.

Aitiip is a Spanish private non-profit innovation center which is involved in the complete whole chain of the production, from the development of the material to the final product. Aitiip is engaged with the circular economy and is one of the more expert centre in the design, use and production of biobased products.

Project role: AITIIP is the technical/RTD coordinator of the proposal and will be responsible of assisting the demo coordinator and management coordination in the development of the project. AITIIP will be responsible also for processing and characterizing the additives developed in the project for biothermoplastics and its recycling assessment, testing the industrial function of the polymer based on new and recycled composites. Aitiip is also the dissemination manager.

Monaghan Mushrooms Group (MONAGHAN) is the largest supplier of fresh mushrooms and mushroom compost in Europe. MONAGHAN sells approximately 1800 tonnes of fresh mushrooms per week and has over 3,500 employees located at 29 locations worldwide including mushroom farms in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, England, The Netherlands, Germany and Canada.

Project role: MONAGHAN will provide a constant supply of mushroom agro-food residues to Neem, UA and KTH for optimization of extraction methods and for the demo plant to evaluate further valorisation to biogas and soil conditioner. MONAGHAN will supply polyols and polysaccharide samples extracted from mushroom waste in the demo plant for product validation.

Biozoon GmbH is a German SME established in 2001 and currently employs 23 persons. Biozoon is located in Bremerhaven at the centre of the north-German food industry. Its main activity is the development and production of innovative food products and ingredients; here Biozoon is market leader in the field of processed texturizers for gastronomy, catering, canteen kitchen as well as for private consumers.

Project role: Biozoon will establish the requirements of the final food supplement to guide RTDs in the kind of antioxidants and lipids to obtain. The company will also validate the extracted additives (especially antimicrobials and somehow proteins) into their food supplement.

Condensia Química is a Spanish company founded in 1975 produce additives for polymers, rubbers, cosmetic, lubricants and polyurethanes.

Project role: CQ will be involved in the preparation of plasticizers. Starting from renewable resource we will up-scale these biodegradable additives for changing mechanical and thermal properties of polymers by adapting and modifying current industrial lines (WP2 and WP3) and will also participate in business strategy for selling the new product (WP5) as well as attending fairs to show and disseminate results.

European Centre for Nanostructured Polymers (ECNP) is a non-for-profit private research centre generated as the final goal of the European Network of Excellence Nanofun-Poly NoE consisting of 26 European universities and research centres. Over the years, ECNP has developed several research projects funded by the European Community, by private industries and by national institutions. Both ECNP expertise and facilities will allow to fulfil the tasks concerning the materials development and environmental impact.

Project role: ECNP has the responsibility of gathering environmental information about all the products and processes developed during the project, to create the LCA and LCC assessment and enrich European tools.

Project role: Neem will be devoted to raw material pre-treatment and recovery, technology transfer from RTDs to companies for up-scaling processes and pilot plant design assistance. They will be also involved in market analysis for existing bio-based chemicals/additives.

UA houses 223 research groups and 15 Research Institutes.

Project role: The participation core of UA will be related to extraction of additives and characterisation at a bench scale, and then the transference of knowledge for the up-scale.

The main activity is the processing of LDPE and HDPE materials, packaging and production of these materials, compounding as well as regeneration and recycling. The products obtained by processing LDPE and HDPE are mainly used in the construction sector, agriculture and in retail sector. These products are: agriculture mulch, shopping bags, garbage bags, construction film foils, and lamination foils etc.

Project role: MI-PLAST will contribute in the chemical composition and specifications of the new end products to be developed. The company will contribute to the present project with the strong knowledge of industrial manufacturing and with its presence in the current South Eastern European and European Union markets and of the sector.

The project will be performed at the Division of Glycoscience (KTH Biotechnology), which is an internationally renowned department performing fundamental and applied research on glycobiology and carbohydrate biotechnology.

Project role: KTH will be involved in the establishment of protocols for the characterization of mushroom biomass, the development of the technology for pressurized hot-water extraction of polysaccharides and proteins from mushroom by-products and the deconstruction of mushroom biomass into a sugar platform for further fermentation.

Project role: the main role of Novamont in this project is to develop and validate new biobased blends from agro- waste for agro-food application (mulch films). In particular, main interests are to experiment and test compounding of starch, PLA and other functional additives, all derived from the extraction from agro wastes( in particular f rom mushrooms farming ) into / with Novamont’s proprietary biomaterials grades. Main final product will be materials for agricultural sector as mulch films.

Project role: Saponia will be involved in the requirements the final product must achieve in terms of biocide activity, and what kind of antimicrobial behavior is expected. Saponia will introduce the antimicrobials extracted into new soaps, detergent products and will perform validation tests.

Project role: Biotrend will contribute to the assessment of suitability of the sugar streams generated in the project as raw materials for fermentation processes. It will also contribute to the scaled implementation of the process and provide kg scale samples of biopolymer to the consortium. Finally, Biotrend will contribute to the adequate integration of the biopolymer production with processing steps upstream the fermentation.
